The string wound filter cartridge is one of the most common and widely used filter cartridges. It is also highly cost-effective. The cartridge is manufactured by tightly winding yarn (typically polypropylene) around a central core. The winding process is designed so that the outer layers are more open, while the inner layers are denser. This structure enables progressive filtration: larger particles are captured in the outer, more open layers, while smaller particles penetrate deeper and are trapped in the tighter inner layers. This principle is characteristic of depth filtration, where impurities are retained throughout the entire thickness of the cartridge rather than only on its surface. As a result, string wound filters have a high dirt-holding capacity and a longer service life compared to surface filters.
String wound cartridges are available in polypropylene, which is the standard material, but also in natural fibers. The inner core is typically made of polypropylene, but it can also be supplied in stainless steel if required. A cartridge made from natural fibers with a stainless steel core can withstand temperatures of up to +140 °C.
