Pump suction strainers are devices used to remove solid impurities and foreign objects from liquids before they enter the pump. They protect the pump from damage, such as clogging or wear of the impeller.
Structure and operating principle
Suction strainers typically consist of a cylindrical or conical body with a perforated or mesh element inside, such as a basket. As the liquid flows through the strainer basket, solid particles like sand, wood fragments, or debris are retained by the screen, while the clean liquid continues toward the pump. The size and perforation of the strainer are selected based on the pumped liquid and the required filtration accuracy.

Applications
Suction strainers are widely used across various industries and applications where liquid cleanliness is critical for pump performance and service life. Typical applications include:
Maintenance and servicing
The efficiency of a strainer depends on its cleanliness. Over time, accumulated impurities can reduce flow and potentially cause pump damage due to cavitation. Regular inspection and cleaning are therefore essential to ensure proper operation. Fortunately, cleaning is usually quick and simple: open the housing cover, remove the filter basket, and wash it. Some systems are equipped with differential pressure sensors that alert when the strainer is becoming clogged.
