The selection of a gear pump is always based on the requirements of the application. Flow rate, viscosity, temperature, pressure and the chemical resistance of the materials all affect which solution is best suited for the process.
BPI-Chempump helps you choose the right pump solution, along with suitable accessories and materials. Long experience in industrial pump solutions and a wide product range make it possible to find a solution that supports production reliability and efficiency in the long term.
Gear pump technology offers clear advantages compared to other pump types when transferring thick or easily foaming media:
Steady and Pulsation-Free Flow
The continuous rotary movement of the gears creates a steady volumetric flow without the pulsation typical of piston and diaphragm pumps. This reduces mechanical stress on the pipeline and makes the process flow easy to control.
Excellent Self-Priming Performance
Thanks to their tight clearances, most gear pumps are self-priming from a suction lift of several metres. This allows flexible pump positioning, including above a tank or basin, without separate foot valves.
Wide Viscosity and Temperature Range
Gear pumps can transfer liquids from light fuels to thick resins, bitumen, adhesives and syrups. With special constructions and heating jackets, the operating temperature can reach up to +200 °C.

High-quality products, technical expertise and personal service help ensure the continuity and safe operation of our customers’ processes.
Gear pumps are used for transferring, circulating and dosing clean and viscous liquids. Common pumped media include lubricating oils, fuels, resins, adhesives, paints, polymers and industrial chemicals that require steady, pulsation-free flow.
Yes, it is one of the best pump types for viscous media. Our range covers solutions up to a viscosity of 20,000 cSt. With very viscous media, the pump speed is reduced using a reduction gear to ensure sufficient filling and prevent cavitation.
As a general rule, gear pumps require clean liquid. Even small abrasive solids or metal particles can wear the precise clearances between the gears and the casing, which reduces the pump’s efficiency and pressure-generating capacity. We always recommend using a suitable filter or basket strainer on the suction side.
Yes, gear pumps are naturally highly self-priming when there is a small amount of liquid in the pump casing to seal the clearances between the gears. However, dry running should be avoided, as the pumped medium often also acts as the lubricant for the bearings and mechanical seal.
In an external gear pump, two identical gears rotate against each other on their outer circumference, making the structure robust, straightforward and capable of handling high pressures. In an internal gear pump, a smaller gear rotates inside a larger gear ring, which is especially suitable for shear-sensitive and very high-viscosity media.
